Tennessee Solar Incentives and Tax Credits
Federal Solar Tax Credit
The Investment Tax Credit (ITC), also called the federal solar tax credit, helps you reduce the cost of your solar energy system. You can deduct 30% of the cost of your solar energy system from your federal income taxes. There is no cap on the value of your tax credit and it applies to both residential and commercial systems.
The federal solar tax credit was recently increased to 30% and its timeline has been extended. If you install a solar PV system between now and 2032 you will receive a 30% tax credit.
The federal solar tax credit helps you save thousands of dollars in upfront costs, in addition to many solar incentives and rebates for the state of New York.
Tennessee Sales Tax Credit
Solar panels and equipment are exempt from Tennessee sales taxes. You do not pay the 7% state sales tax for your solar energy system and equipment, although you may have local and county sales taxes.
Our solar consultants can help answer any questions you have about finding the most tax credits, exemptions, and incentives for where you live in Tennessee.
Green Energy Property Tax Assessment
Green Energy Property Tax Assessment caps the taxable amount of value that installing a solar system can add to your property. The assessed value of your property cannot exceed 12.5% of what it cost you to install your home’s solar energy system.
For example, if you install a $20,000 solar energy system for your home, the state of Tennessee will only consider it to add up to $2,500 to your home’s property value. You pay additional property taxes on 12.5% of your home’s solar system instead of paying property taxes on the full amount of your home’s solar installation.
Solar Increases the Property Value for Your Home
Long-term savings with solar energy will increase your home’s property value. A recent study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) found that your home’s value increases by $20 for every $1 you save on your electricity bills by installing solar panels.
For example, if your home’s solar energy system saves you $700 every year, your home’s value can increase by $14,000.
